Holland Public Schools uses the Battle Creek Science Kits program. In 5th grade we start with the "Objects in the Sky" (astronomy) unit. We then move on to "Forces and Motion" (physics) and then "Systems and Survival" (biology). I supplement these kits with basic science instruction on the Scientific Method, Gathering Data, Creating and Interpreting Graphs, and Reading Scientific Literature. I use the monthly magazine "Super Science" to connect students to the "real world" of science. This magazine features articles and assignments that bring the world of science into our classroom while simultaneously providing students reading and writing practice.
